Base Camp Collective

What is the base camp collective?

What is it?

The Basecamp Collective is our guided adventure experience.

Lake Hāwea View sits at the centre of some of the most spectacular terrain in the country, with the rivers, mountains and lakes of the region all within reach from a single base. We make the property your basecamp and build an active itinerary around your group, from hiking and biking to packrafting and time on the water.

Each itinerary is shaped by Braden Currie, a professional endurance athlete who knows this landscape and the lines through it. Head out with us each day, then return to a settled base with the lake and mountains laid out before you.

Choose a three day escape, a full week, or a custom itinerary shaped around your pace.

Adventures on Water and Land

Summer of Multisport

Wild Water & Trails is a multi-day adventure itinerary designed to experience the full force and beauty of the Lake Hāwea and Wānaka landscape — from alpine trails and mountain bike tracks to lake journeys, river corridors and white water. Each day offers a different way to move through the environment. Guests may paddle across the still waters of Lake Hāwea, take on guided pack rafting or white water rafting expeditions, hike or trail run through remote high-country terrain, or explore the region’s mountain biking trails. The itinerary is shaped day by day, allowing for a rich mix of adventure, challenge and immersion in some of the South Island’s most remarkable natural places. Everything is arranged so guests can focus entirely on the experience. Guiding, transport, equipment, catering and logistics are all taken care of, creating seamless days of adventure without the stress of planning. Whether the day is spent navigating river rapids, moving through mountain valleys, riding singletrack or paddling beneath wide open skies, each experience is designed to connect guests more deeply with the land, water and wildness of the region. At the end of each day, Lake Hāwea View offers the ultimate return — warm hospitality, nourishing food, panoramic views and space to fully recover. Guests can unwind in the sauna, reset in the ice bath, enjoy optional stretch sessions, book massage and settle into the comfort of the property before the next day’s adventure begins.

Centred around Snow

The Winter Edition

The Winter Edition is a week-long alpine escape based at Lake Hāwea View, designed to experience the very best of winter in and around Wānaka. With the comfort of a private luxury retreat as home base, guests can spend their days exploring the region’s snow-covered mountains, then return each evening to warmth, nourishment and space to recover. The week is shaped around access to Wānaka’s premier winter experiences. Days may be spent skiing at Cardrona or Treble Cone, exploring cross-country skiing trails, or elevating the experience with a heli-skiing adventure into the surrounding alpine terrain. Each day can be tailored to the group, balancing big days on the mountain with slower moments to enjoy the landscape, the house and the season. Beyond the slopes, the itinerary can be layered with some of Wānaka’s favourite winter experiences — from a visit to Cardrona Distillery after a day in the snow, to highlight dinners at some of the region’s best restaurants. On evenings spent at Lake Hāwea View, guests can enjoy fully catered dinners, relaxed fireside gatherings and the ease of having everything taken care of. Recovery is woven into the experience. After a day in the mountains, guests can unwind in the sauna, reset with an ice bath, book in-house massage, stretch, rest and take in the lake and mountain views from the comfort of the property. The Winter Edition brings together adventure, hospitality and alpine luxury for a deeply memorable Wānaka winter escape.

Braden Currie is one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed endurance athletes, with a sixteen-year career at the top of global endurance sport. Across 92 events, he claimed 51 wins and 72 podiums, including bronze at the IRONMAN World Championship in 2021, victory at IRONMAN New Zealand on debut, and multiple Asia Pacific titles

Before road racing, Braden built his name in adventure racing, XTERRA and events like the Coast to Coast, disciplines that demand far more than fitness. They require reading terrain, adapting to conditions, moving efficiently through mountains and rivers, and knowing how to pace people through long, challenging days in the outdoors.

That experience sits at the heart of the Basecamp Collective. Braden designs and facilitates each itinerary with the same calm judgement, leadership and deep knowledge of the landscape that shaped his career. Based in Wānaka, where he grew up exploring this country, he brings guests into the trails, routes and places most people never find, creating days that are challenging, considered and unforgettable.
